Optical design

A Schmidt corrector plate at the front, a spherical primary at the back, and a convex secondary that folds a 1 500 mm light path into a 400 mm tube. The 33% central obstruction is larger than a Maksutov’s and costs some contrast; the compactness is what you get in return.

Visual observing

150 mm is a real aperture. Globular clusters begin to resolve, the brighter Messier galaxies show shape, and the planets hold detail at 200× on a decent night. The GoTo database earns its keep under light-polluted skies where star-hopping is genuinely difficult.

The narrow field is the constant compromise. At 1 500 mm even a 32 mm eyepiece gives barely a degree — the Pleiades will not fit, the Andromeda Galaxy fills the field with its core alone. Most 6SE owners eventually add binoculars or a small refractor for wide views.

Nebula imaging

The wrong instrument. f/10 is slow, the field is narrow, and the alt-azimuth fork rotates the field during an exposure. The f/6.3 reducer improves matters but does not change the conclusion.

Galaxy imaging

Focal length and aperture are both plausible for galaxies, and this is where the 6SE is most often misjudged. The blocker is the mount: on an alt-azimuth fork, field rotation smears star images at the frame edges after roughly thirty to sixty seconds depending on where the target sits. An equatorial wedge removes that limit and turns the 6SE into a modest but workable galaxy imager — at the cost of a wedge, a proper polar alignment routine, and most of the portability.

Planetary imaging

Here the 6SE is genuinely good. Field rotation does not matter over a two-minute video capture, the tracking is accurate enough to hold a planet on a small sensor, and 1 500 mm needs only a 2× Barlow to reach a well-sampled planetary image scale. Add a dew heater and a high-frame-rate camera and this is a complete planetary imaging setup.

Portability, setup, cooling and maintenance

The tube lifts off the arm in seconds, and the whole system splits into three carryable pieces totalling about 13 kg. Setup is a two-star alignment lasting a couple of minutes. Allow around thirty minutes for the tube to reach ambient before high magnification looks its best, and fit a dew shield — the exposed corrector plate is the first thing to fog.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Complete package: tube, mount, tripod, diagonal, eyepiece and a GoTo database in one box.
  • 1 500 mm of focal length in a 400 mm tube, so it stores and transports far more easily than its capability suggests.
  • Genuinely quick to set up — the tube comes off the arm in seconds and the whole system goes in a car boot without disassembly.

Limitations

  • The single-arm alt-azimuth mount introduces field rotation, which limits deep-sky sub-exposures to tens of seconds regardless of tracking accuracy.
  • The mount is close to its payload limit with a camera and accessories fitted; vibration settles slowly.
  • The corrector plate dews quickly and there is no dew shield in the box.
