Both put roughly 203 mm to your eye, and on deep-sky objects the views are comparable, with a slight edge to the Dobsonian's wider possible field and smaller central obstruction. The Dobsonian costs a fraction as much and needs no power. The 8SE tracks, finds objects for you, and packs into a boot without disassembly. Under badly light-polluted skies where star-hopping is genuinely hard, GoTo earns its price; under dark skies with a good atlas, it mostly does not.

For nebula imaging: Both are the wrong shape of telescope for wide nebulae

The Dobsonian cannot track. The 8SE is f/10 with a field under a degree and rotates during exposures. Even with the f/6.3 reducer the 8SE frames a small fraction of any large emission nebula. This is a case where the correct advice is to buy something else entirely: a 72 mm ED refractor on a small tracking mount will produce a better nebula image than either of these on its first clear night, for far less money.

For this purpose we do not recommend either telescope. The reasons are below — buying one anyway is a decision you should make with them in front of you.

      The Dobsonian's undriven alt-azimuth base cannot track at all, so exposures are limited to a fraction of a second. The 8SE tracks but rotates the field, capping usable sub-exposures at roughly thirty seconds — nowhere near enough at f/10. Both can be made to work with substantial additional hardware: an equatorial platform for the Dobsonian, a wedge for the 8SE. Neither is a sensible starting point for deep-sky imaging, and a small refractor on a tracking mount will outperform both for less money.

        The apertures are nearly identical and the Dobsonian's smaller central obstruction is a genuine contrast advantage. None of that matters when the target drifts off a small sensor in seconds. The 8SE tracks accurately enough for a two-minute video capture and offers 2 032 mm natively against the Dobsonian's 1 200 mm, so it needs less amplification. An equatorial platform under the Dobsonian changes the answer, and is the standard route for Dobsonian owners who want to image planets.

        Pair-specific analysis

        The comparison is not really about optics

        203 mm is 203 mm. Both telescopes gather the same light and resolve to about the same limit, and on a globular cluster the difference between them is smaller than the difference between two nights of seeing.

        What you are choosing between is a mount philosophy and a price.

        What the Dobsonian gives up

        Tracking, and only tracking. At 60× an object drifts across the field in a couple of minutes, which is barely noticeable. At 250× it crosses in twenty seconds, and you nudge continuously. Most observers stop noticing within a few sessions; some never make peace with it. If you intend to share views with other people — handing the eyepiece to a child who then has to re-find Saturn — tracking is worth a great deal more than the specification suggests.

        It also gives up automated finding. Under a dark sky with a decent atlas this is a pleasure rather than a cost. Under a suburban sky where you cannot see the guide stars you would hop from, it is a real obstacle, and this is the honest case for GoTo.

        What the 8SE gives up

        Field of view, contrast and money.

        At f/10 the widest true field is around 0.8 degrees. The Dobsonian at f/5.9 with a 2-inch eyepiece reaches roughly twice that. Large objects — the Veil, the Andromeda Galaxy’s full extent, the double cluster with surrounding field — fit in one and not the other.

        The 34% central obstruction against the Dobsonian’s 22% costs some planetary contrast at equal aperture. And the price difference is not marginal: it typically buys a very good eyepiece set, or most of a second telescope.

        Storage decides more arguments than optics do

        The Dobsonian assembled is 24 kg and 1.15 m tall. It moves in two pieces and it needs somewhere to live. If that somewhere is a ground-floor cupboard or a garage, this is a non-issue. If it is a first-floor flat, it is the whole issue.

        The 8SE breaks into a tube, a fork arm and a tripod, and reassembles in under a minute. That is the capability people actually pay for, more often than they pay for GoTo.

        What we would tell a friend

        If you have somewhere to keep it and access to a reasonably dark sky, buy the Dobsonian and put the difference into eyepieces and petrol to get out of town. You will see more.

        If you observe from a light-polluted garden, or you need the telescope to travel, or you know yourself well enough to know that a manual finding routine will stop you going out, buy the 8SE. A telescope you use is worth more than a telescope that is optically superior.
