Three air-spaced elements with an FCD-100 extra-low-dispersion centre element. Where a doublet leaves a faint violet residual, a well-made triplet removes it: on Venus at 200× there is simply no colour fringe to notice. That correction is the entire justification for the price.
The field remains curved — triplet does not mean flat — so imaging still requires a flattener or the 0.7× reducer/flattener.
This is the strongest visual instrument among the small refractors here. At 714 mm it reaches useful magnifications with ordinary eyepieces, splits close doubles cleanly, and shows lunar detail with the sort of contrast that only an unobstructed aperture provides. It cools in minutes and never needs collimating.
The limit is aperture. A 200 mm Dobsonian costing a third as much will show far more on faint galaxies and globular clusters. What the ED102 gives you instead is a sharper, cleaner, more consistent image of the things bright enough to see at all — and the freedom to set up in ninety seconds.
With the flattener, star shapes across an APS-C frame are excellent. With the 0.7× reducer the system runs at about 500 mm and f/4.9, which is a genuinely good wide-field imaging configuration and the one most owners settle on.
f/7 native is slow for extended nebulosity, so this is a telescope that rewards patience and narrowband filters rather than one that produces quick results.
714 mm sits below the useful window for small galaxies but works for the larger, brighter ones. The optics are certainly good enough; the aperture is what limits how faint the outer structure gets before noise takes over.
Better than most refractors of this size, and the lack of a central obstruction gives it a contrast advantage at equal aperture. But 102 mm resolves to roughly 1.1 arcseconds at the Dawes limit, and an eight-inch catadioptric resolves to half that. On a night of good seeing the larger telescope wins decisively.
At 4.5 kg and 730 mm it is a two-hand carry, not a grab-and-go. It needs a real mount — a photo tripod will vibrate for seconds after every touch. Maintenance is nil: sealed optics, no collimation, no cooling wait beyond a few minutes.
